Testing

The testing portion will take place during the third phase of the project (CWU's Spring quarter between 3/28-6/2/2023). The methods are directly related to ensuring the analyses on the project are in fact relevant to the RC-Baja project, and each team member has come up with a minimum of three tests to run on the car through the testing phase of the project. The first test will be in relation to requirement 1d-#19, the motor will not exceed an outer temperature of 40 degrees Celsius during or immediately after 5 minutes of continuous operation. The second test will involve requirement 1d-#14, the drivetrain must not exceed a temperature of 77 degrees Celsius during or immediately after 5 minutes of continuous operation as to not damage the magnets in the motor. The third test will be to ensure the entire vehicle can be assembled within 12 minutes to ensure ease of manufacturing and assembly. The final test will involve making sure the vehicle can reach and maintain top speed as well as absorb the impact force of a top speed crash into an immovable object without any signs of structural damage and further testing will be added as necessary. Any additional testing will be added as conceived at any point until the final competition at the end of the testing phase.

The primary test focused on the motor efficiency to ensure that the motor will not overheat during the competition by applying the normal force experienced by operating the vehicle for five uninterrupted minutes of full throttle with only three minutes of down time between each trial. Image T-1 shows the set up used to operate the test (until updated this test was conducted with just the motor as there were replacement parts printing). Test two focused on the deflection test of the chassis in the INSTROM machine and the deflection experienced by the various applied loads; image T-2 shows the set up on how the test was conducted. Test three will focus on the top speed capability of the vehicle and seeing if there is anything needed to be done to make the car reach the predicted requirement of 20-25 miles per hour.
